These are Ella Fitzgerald’s own words. Don’t discount her feelings on the matter. Yes, you don’t get a cookie for not being a racist. But this was a time when people didn’t usually call out this sort of racism. Ella says it there in her own words: Marilyn was “ahead of her time and didn’t know it.” Fitzgerald was in a situation where she had no power. Where most POC performers had no power. And many white performers had no interest or cared too much for their own careers to call bullshit when they saw it.

This isn’t a story about white saviorism. This is a fond memory of Ella Fitzgerald’s, where she recalls one woman stepping up for another.
